DIY Magnetic Eyeshadow Palette - Tutorial Update

I decided to make another magnetic makeup palette so I could condense all my LORAC palettes into 1.  

 

 

If you've been following my blog then you've probably seen my tutorial on how to make your own "z palette".

This time I needed to make a bigger palette  and so I came up with the idea of using my daughter's old book.

For the materials, you will need:

-hardcover book (thickness should be the same as that of the foam)

-printed packaging tape

-sheet of black foam  

-magnetic sheet

-transparent sheet

-ribbon

-ruler

-glue

-xacto knife

 

1. I start by cutting out the pages of the book since we will only need the cover.



 

2. Measure and draw the window.





 

3. Cut out the window with your knife.

 

4. Place a strip of tape in the center to cover the crack where the pages used to be.

 

5. Next is cut your magnetic sheet. I placed one side of the book on top of my sheet as a guide. I decided to cut it a little smaller to leave room for my foam strips but this is optional since you can always glue your foam on top of your magnet too.







 

6. I then cut my foam into about 1cm strips (just eyeballed it) and then cut it based on the length and width of the back side of the book.

 

7. I then glued the magnetic sheet and foam using my fabric glue. (this is what I like to use on most of my projects even when its not fabric because it holds up pretty good but you can also use craft glue or your glue gun)

 

8. Next, I covered the edges of the window with tape by overlapping it and folding it over to the other side.

 

9. I then cut my transparent sheet  to put over the window. I used the piece I cut out for the window as my guide and just added about an inch extra on each side.

 

9. Now you can tape the transparent sheet  over the window.

 



 

10. Now cover the rest of the book with tape.

 











 11. Almost done. Now cut a strip of ribbon long enough to be used as a flap to close the palette ( probably  around 2 - 3 inches) and then attach one end to the backside of the palette by taping it.

 

12. Cut two 1 inch squares out of the left over magnetic strip and then place one on the front side of the palette where the ribbon flap is suppose to close and cover it with tape. Lastly, glue the other square on the ribbon.

 



...and you're done! I took a picture of this palette with one of the palettes from my first tutorial so you can see the difference in size.

PINTEREST INSPIRED PROJECTS

I know I haven't been able to do a lot of posts lately and that's because I've been busy creating all kinds of stuff that have been inspired by a new website called Pinterest. For those of you who are not familiar with it, Pinterest is the hottest craze online right now. It's basically a site where you can create different boards and pin ideas and products to it. It's like looking through a magazine except it has everything you can think of like style, home decor, crafts, etc. all in one site and the best part is....it's FREE! If you would like to join, just click on that red button on the top right  of my page that says "follow me on pinterest".

The first things I made were these bracelets.

When I saw these on Pinterest I absolutely loved 'em but I found out that you can only get them on Etsy and they were selling for about $35 to $40. I really cannot justify spending that much on a bracelet made out of plastic and gold links so I decided to make them. I could not find any tutorials for this so I just had to figure it out on my own. (Please leave a comment below if you would like me to post a tutorial.)

Another type of bracelet I made was this one. This is made out of two chains that I connected with a braiding cord.

After making jewelry, I turned my attention to making decorations for our Easter party. I made wreaths to hang on my door, some paper flowers to hang above the dining room and some topiaries to put on my candy bar.

DIY Candy Jar

This candy jar idea is perfect for Easter and other occasions like birthday parties and the best part....it will only cost you about $5. Below are the list of materials you will need to make it.

-flower pot
-flower pot base/plate
-round glass vase (you can probably find at the dollar store)
-wooden knob (Wal-mart or any craft store)
-glue like E6000 (should be waterproof)
-paint (acrylic, spray, ceramic....)
-clear coat (in my case I used Mod Podge)

All you need to do is paint the pot, base and knob with the desired color. Apply the clear coat. Glue the glass vase to the pot and then glue the knob to the bottom side of the plate and Viola! You have a cute candy jar.

DUST FREE BRUSHES - Makeup Brush Holder Ideas

When I first started collecting makeup brushes, I would just put them in a jar and leave them sitting out. I noticed that they would get so dusty especially ones that I don't use every day. I spend a lot of time washing my makeup brushes so the last thing I want is for them to get dusty before I even use them. I dont know, but the idea of using a brush full of dust on my face just doesn't sit well with me so this is what I came up with.

I love the fact that this isn't just a brush holder but it also serves as a beautiful decorative piece for my counter. I got these at TJMaxx for $9.99 each but if you don't have any of the discount stores by you, you can also find jars similar to this one at your local craft store. I know Joanns and Michaels have them and they are about $25-$30 but you can use a 40 or 50% off coupon to make them more affordable.

There is also a jar that you can get at Walmart (Houseware section) for $7.44 which I think is a good alternative. Here is what it looks like.

Now for those of you who have a smaller brush colletion, here is another idea.

This case came with a microdermabrasion kit I had bought so I can't really tell you exactly where to get one but I'm sure you can find something similar to this somewhere.

DIY Magnetic Eyeshadow Palette (z palette dupe)

As I was going through all my makeup, I realized that I had so many eyeshadows, particularly single ones, that I have not used in so long. The whole reason for this was because they were all buried in my drawers. It just seemed like grabbing my bigger palettes was so much easier to do than looking through all my single shadows to find the color I wanted. I decided to look online for empty makeup palettes and came across the  Z-palette. They are basically empty palettes with a magnetic base inside to hold your single shadows. The thing that makes this different from other palettes is that it has a clear window in the front so you can see whats inside. I thought that was pretty cool and it was exactly what I needed......well, that was until I saw the price. It's $20 for the large one and $28 for what they call the PRO, which is just a tiny bit bigger than the large. I was for sure gonna need more than one and there was no way I was gonna be able to justify spending that much money on "empty" palettes so I just decided to make it.

I started by looking for some kind of base I can use so I wouldnt have to make it from scratch (although I do have a tutorial on that too that I'll be posting soon) and this is what I found. My old elf palette.

 I didnt care for the shadows in this palette so I didnt mind taking it apart. I cut the foam holding the shadows out with my xacto knife and left the sides to create a frame.



I then measured and cut my magnetic sheet that I got at my local craft store and glued it on.

Next is making the window on the cover. I measured the size of the window, or at least tried to, using my daughters circus stencil ruler and cut it out. (Its amazing how I have every craft tool you can dream of but could not find a decent ruler in my house!)

I chose to use packaging tape to cover the palette because one, I had some just sitting on my table from when I bought it at the store for 75% off and two, it would make things so much easier since I would'nt have to apply any kind of glaze unlike if I used paper then I would have to seal it. I also found that this tape worked best for me since I kept on messing up and had to take it out a few times and restick.

(If you're wondering why there is a seam on my magnetic sheet, it's because

the piece I had left was too small so I had to use two pcs)

Next I cut a transparent sheet that I also got at the craft store a long time ago and taped it to the inside of the window.

I then covered the rest of the palette with tape including the backside and I was done. This palette already had a magnetic closure so there was no need to add one.

Here is another palette that I made out of my Lauren luke palette.

This one didnt have any magnets to close it so I just added a piece of ribbon with velcro. I would have added a magnetic closure but my magnet was not strong enough. On the inside I also had to cut foam strips to serve as the frame.
